Red Cross Supports Japanese Tsunami Survivors with Basic Appliances

Thursday, June 09, 2011-Red Cross is providing many families in Japan with household appliances whose property got completely destroyed due to a natural disaster which occurred on March 11. In addition, some families have received the keys to their new homes; government-built, prefabricated temporary houses erected on a sports field in Asahi, a city in Chiba prefecture on the east coast of Japan.

Red Cross will continue to support people evacuated from Japan’s radiation zone. Toshie Nakajo, 60, a survivor of tsunami waves, with tears in her eyes remembers, “I thought I was going to die. I always thought these type of disasters happened to somebody else, that they’d never happen to me. When I’m in a situation like this I really appreciate Red Cross and everything everyone has done. I escaped only with the clothes I was wearing. We have lost everything.”

The Japanese Red Cross is providing Nakajo with a set of basic appliances to help her and her family get back on their feet; a washing machine, refrigerator, rice cooker, hot water dispenser, microwave and TV.

“I’m just so grateful to Red Cross and everyone for their help and support,” Nakajo said.
